Rand Paul Tours Fort Knox, Says All 147 Million Ounces of Gold Are There

Senator Rand Paul got a rare look inside Fort Knox this week, and instead of just settling a decades-old conspiracy about missing gold, he used the visit to make a case about the dollar that Bitcoiners have been making for years.

THE VISIT

"At Fort Knox, we've come to see the gold," Paul said in a video posted from outside the facility. "Our country has about a hundred and forty-seven million ounces of gold, and about half of it is stored here at Fort Knox. We're gonna be going deep underground to see the gold, but more importantly, we're gonna be talking today about what happened to our dollar when we separated from gold in 1971."

After the tour, Paul followed up with a post confirming what he saw. "Yes, the gold is there, all (approximately) 147 million ounces. It is impressive, but the real point is what it still teaches" in the present day, he wrote. Paul stated that Fort Knox holds approximately 147 million ounces of gold, which is half of the U.S. gold reserve. Official Mint records list 147,341,858 ounces at Fort Knox, still valued on the books at $42.22 per ounce, a price frozen in 1973. That makes the hoard worth $6.2 billion on paper and about $644 billion at today's roughly $4,372 gold price.

THE REAL ARGUMENT: WHAT HAPPENED SINCE 1971

Paul's deeper point was about the dollar, not the vault. Since the dollar left gold in 1971, he says it has lost roughly 85% of its value. In another post, he pointed out that the dollar has lost 97% of its purchasing power since the Federal Reserve was established in 1913, equating $100 in 1913 to $3,300 today. Paul linked today's affordability crisis to inflation, citing $2 trillion annual deficits.

He framed the language around the issue as deliberately misleading. What gets called an affordability crisis, he argued, is inflation caused by government spending diluting the currency, not a personal failure to earn enough.

WHY BITCOINERS ARE PAYING ATTENTION

The clip drew heavy engagement online, and on the show, the hosts framed it as evidence that the Overton window on inflation and currency debasement has shifted, with a sitting senator now making arguments about 1971 and the Fed that were once confined to niche corners of the internet.

Not everyone was satisfied. On the show, the hosts pointed to a viral post from commentator Tom Luongo pushing back on the wave of skepticism that met Paul's video, arguing that decades of official silence about Fort Knox's contents, not the gold's actual presence, is what created the conspiracy in the first place. Other reactions online were more pointed, with one reply arguing that "the American people do not trust you" and that a supervised tour is no substitute for an independent count.

The skepticism has a specific, resolvable gap at its center: in the letter to the Treasury announcing his visit, Paul also expressed his desire to see an independent audit done of the Depository, raising the question of whether there is really as much gold as the Treasury says. A guided walkthrough is not that audit. Until an independent, physically verified count happens, Paul's word, and the country's, remains the only account of what is actually in the vault.
