BitMEX to Shut Down September 23, Ending an 11-Year Run in Crypto Derivatives

One of crypto's original derivatives exchanges is closing down. BitMEX, the platform that popularized 100x leverage trading and the perpetual swap, announced it will shut down entirely after 11 years in business.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT

The company announced the closure of the BitMEX exchange, effective September 23, 2026, following a strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry by the board of HDR Global Trading Limited, the owner and operator of BitMEX. In a statement to users, the company called the decision difficult and said it came "with a very heavy heart."

The Seychelles-based firm immediately halted all new account registrations and told users to begin closing positions and withdrawing funds well ahead of the deadline. There is no indication the closure is tied to a hack. BitMEX has never experienced a security breach.

ELEVEN YEARS THAT DEFINED CRYPTO LEVERAGE

BitMEX opened in 2014 and became one of the most influential platforms in crypto by popularizing the 100x leverage perpetual swap, a product that went on to become standard across the industry. The company describes the perpetual swap as the first step into crypto trading for most of its users, and says it is now the most traded financial product in the crypto industry, adopted by thousands of users and exchanges.

The exchange also built a reputation on security even as its market position slipped. BitMEX says it has maintained a flawless track record of zero customer funds lost to hacks across its entire operating history.

That legacy came with real turbulence. The exchange's co-founders, including Arthur Hayes, faced U.S. penalties tied to anti-money laundering and know-your-customer violations in past years, and BitMEX's share of the derivatives market shrank steadily as rivals and decentralized platforms gained ground.

THE WIND-DOWN TIMELINE

The shutdown is not immediate. New account registrations stopped on July 23. From August 26, users will no longer be able to open new positions, with only position reductions allowed. At 04:00 UTC on September 23, BitMEX will permanently shut down, and any remaining open positions will be automatically closed.

The exchange had reportedly been looking for a buyer since February 2025, working with Broadhaven Capital Partners on a sale process, before the board settled on winding the business down instead.

THE END OF AN ERA

BitMEX's closure lands as institutional money keeps moving deeper into Bitcoin, from spot ETFs to a new consortium of asset managers now funding Bitcoin's core security research. The platform that once defined the degenerate, VPN-and-a-demo-account era of crypto trading is closing its doors at the same moment the industry it helped build looks increasingly like a regulated financial market. Whether BitMEX Research, the exchange's widely followed technical analysis arm, continues to operate independently of the trading platform has not been addressed in the company's wind-down announcement.
