Simply Bitcoin is putting up 500,000 sats for the best Bitcoin meme answering Jason Calacanis's claim that the memes and the mania are over. It is also the tail end of a longer conversation the show brought back from a week in Lugano about whether Bitcoin's messaging has become part of its own problem.

The contest is simple. Reply to Simply Bitcoin's tweet announcing the meme war with an original Bitcoin meme, and the entry with the best shot at making the team laugh, or the one that pulls the most engagement, wins 500,000 sats. Entries close Friday around 11 a.m. Eastern, with the winner announced on Friday's live show. The judging is not a vote. It is whichever meme the team actually finds funniest, and by the show's own account there were already more than 50 entries within the first hours of the announcement.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN ENTRY

The only rule is that it has to be an original Bitcoin meme, posted publicly as a reply to the announcement tweet on X rather than sent privately. The brief is open on purpose: a picture, a catchphrase, a format twist on an existing joke, anything with enough truth in it to land. The point, as the show put it, is to make something a normal person could stumble onto and actually get.

WHY THIS CAME UP IN LUGANO

The contest did not come out of nowhere. At the Plan B conference in Lugano last week, Simply Bitcoin's team spent time with creator Max Demarco, whose workshop argued that terms the community treats as obvious, self-custody, hardware wallets, cold storage, are still a real barrier for anyone encountering Bitcoin for the first time. The suggestion was not to drop the substance, but to stop assuming jargon travels on its own.

Mike Germano, Simply Bitcoin's president and a former Vice and Bitcoin Magazine executive, framed it as a market research problem: keep the ideas, but test the language the way any product would test its pitch before assuming it lands. A separate conversation with Coinjoin Chris took a harder angle, arguing that two years of infighting and tribalism inside Bitcoin have cost the community more credibility with newcomers than any outside critic ever could.

THE PUNCHLINE THAT STARTED THE PRIZE

That is the backdrop Calacanis walked into when he declared that Bitcoin's memes and NFTs are gone and that nobody is bothering to convince people to buy in anymore. Simply Bitcoin's answer is not a rebuttal thread. It is a cash prize daring the community to prove him wrong by actually making something funny, which is a more honest test of the claim than any counter-argument would be.
