Jamie Dimon Still Hates Bitcoin. His Firm Still Had To Price It.

Jamie Dimon Still Hates Bitcoin. His Firm Still Had To Price It.

For a decade, the loudest voice in American banking called Bitcoin a fraud, a pet rock, and a thing that would evaporate the moment its supply ran out. That voice never recanted. His own asset management division just forecast that the thing he mocked will outperform stocks and gold for the next ten to fifteen years anyway. The gap between those two facts is the whole mechanism of how Bitcoin wins converts who were never persuaded of anything.

THE RECORD NOBODY DISPUTES

Jamie Dimon has called Bitcoin a fraud since 2017, compared it to the tulip bubble, and said he would fire any JPMorgan trader caught dealing in it. In 2021 he said plainly that he personally thought Bitcoin was worthless. In 2023, at Davos, he called it "a hyped-up fraud" and "a pet rock," and when a CNBC anchor raised the 21 million supply cap, Dimon's response was that Satoshi's picture would show up and laugh once it got there. In 2024 he said he was done talking about it, again, and that Bitcoin "does nothing."

None of that is disputed, and none of it needs editorializing. It is simply the public record of the man running the bank whose asset management arm just did something very different with the same asset.

A FORECAST DOESN'T NEED A CONFESSION

J.P. Morgan Asset Management's 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, the firm's 31st annual edition of a report built for institutional portfolio planning, included Bitcoin for the first time. The base case: a 10 percent compound annual return over the next ten to fifteen years. That sits above the 7.5 percent the firm projects for U.S. large-cap stocks and the 5.5 percent it projects for gold.

Nobody at the top of the bank had to apologize for a decade of mockery to get there. The number simply had to get published under the firm's own letterhead, inside a document built for pension funds and endowments to plan decades around. The research desk did not need Dimon's permission. It needed the math to hold up, and it did.

A torn page of crossed out words overlapped by a clean grid of printed numbers.

THE DESK DOESN'T ANSWER TO THE OPINION COLUMN

This is the part that matters past the headline. A long-term capital market assumptions report is not a press release and it is not a chairman's op-ed. It exists so an institution can tell its clients what to expect from an asset class over a decade, and a wrong number there costs the firm more than a wrong quote on cable news ever will. Conviction and computation sit in different departments at a bank that size, and only one of them has to be honest for a number like this to leak out the side door while the other keeps talking about pet rocks.

That is not hypocrisy exactly. It is closer to the opposite: the bank's own incentive structure overruling its CEO's decade of public certainty, because the people whose job is to be right about returns answer to a different standard than the people whose job is to be quotable.

THE VOLATILITY THEY FLAG AS A FLAW IS THE PRICE OF NO ONE BEING IN CHARGE

JPMorgan's own report pegs Bitcoin's annualized volatility at 55 percent, against roughly 17 percent for gold, and that is exactly why the firm still will not add Bitcoin to the models it uses to map how assets move together. The correlation is too unstable, the swings too wide, the data too young by the bank's own standard.

But look at what produces that volatility in the first place. Gold's price gets smoothed by central bank reserves, leasing markets, and official buyers acting with some coordination. Equities get backstopped by central banks willing to intervene when things get disorderly enough. Bitcoin has none of that. There is no desk anywhere with the authority to lean on the order book, no lender of last resort standing behind the price, no committee that meets when the chart gets ugly. The volatility JPMorgan flags as a reason to keep Bitcoin out of its models is the direct cost of there being no one to call when the price moves. You cannot get the decade of return without the asset that nobody can quietly manage on the way there.

A Bitcoin coin floating above a tangled web of connected strings, untethered from it.

THE CLIENT WHO NOW HAS A QUESTION

Here is the human stake inside a spreadsheet most people will never open. A financial advisor spends years telling a client that Bitcoin is a speculative sideshow, not worth the conversation. That advisor's own firm just published a document projecting it will outperform every traditional asset class the client already owns. The client does not need to understand volatility models or covariance matrices to ask the only question that matters: if your own research expects this to beat my portfolio, why wasn't it ever on the table?

That is the actual mechanism of institutional adoption, and it has nothing to do with anyone changing their mind. A number inside a formal planning document becomes leverage for the next person's question, and the next advisor's meeting, whether or not the chairman upstairs ever walks anything back.

An empty chair at the head of a table while hands elsewhere write numbers into a ledger.

BITCOIN NEVER NEEDED THE APOLOGY

Bitcoin's fixed supply did not wait for a research division's permission to start pricing in scarcity, and it will not wait for Jamie Dimon to say he was wrong, because it was never built to need either one. The network settles blocks on schedule whether the chairman of the largest bank in the country calls it a pet rock or a long-term outperformer in the same decade. What changed this month was not Bitcoin. What changed is that one more institution's own math finally had to catch up to a network that was never asking for its belief in the first place.
