Crypto Spent $200 Million on Today's Midterms. Stand With Crypto Says the Bet Is Paying Off

Americans vote today in midterm elections that will decide the makeup of the Congress that gets to act, or not act, on crypto policy for the next two years. Ahead of the vote, Mason Lynaugh, executive director of Stand With Crypto, joined the show to lay out what is actually at stake and why he thinks Bitcoin owners underestimate their own leverage.

WHY A MIDTERM MATTERS MORE THAN BITCOINERS ADMIT

Lynaugh's basic pitch is structural. The presidency sets direction through executive orders, but Congress is the body that actually writes and passes law, which means a crypto-friendly White House without a crypto-friendly Congress behind it can only go so far. "This is a moment for Bitcoin owners, crypto owners to hit the polls again," he said, framing the midterms as voters telling the next batch of lawmakers directly what their priorities are.

WHERE CRYPTO'S LEGISLATIVE WINS ACTUALLY STAND

The record so far is mixed, and worth being precise about. The GENIUS Act, which set the first federal framework for stablecoins, became law in July 2025. The Clarity Act, the broader market structure bill the industry has treated as its top priority, failed a Senate cloture vote 49 to 50 on September 15, 2026, falling short of the 60 votes needed to proceed. That does not kill the bill, but it pushes any realistic path to passage into a lame-duck session or the next Congress.

The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve sits in a similar spot. It exists today only because President Trump created it by executive order in March 2025, which means a future administration could unwind it with another order. Representative Nick Begich's American Reserve Modernization Act, which would write the reserve into statute and require Bitcoin to stay in Treasury custody for at least 20 years, cleared the House Financial Services Committee by a 28 to 21 vote in September but still needs to pass the full House and the Senate. Lynaugh's read is that the reserve itself can persist regardless of who holds Congress, but locking it in permanently requires exactly the kind of lawmakers this week's vote will decide.

THE $200 MILLION GROUND GAME

Stand With Crypto has endorsed 45 candidates this cycle, 42 running for the House and three for the Senate, and crypto-aligned super PACs have put more than $200 million into House and Senate races, making digital asset groups the largest cohort of single-issue super PACs in US political history. Lynaugh described this cycle as the first time the organization has run a real volunteer operation, with advocates phone banking and canvassing rather than just donating. "This is the first time we've ever done it," he said. "No other time in history have we seen even technology enthusiasts go out and canvas and phone bank."

He was careful to separate enthusiasm from turnout. Crypto owners report being highly motivated to vote, he said, but motivation does not automatically translate into ballots cast, which is why the final week of outreach focuses on logistics: making sure people have a plan to actually get to the polls.

SHOULD BITCOIN BE A SINGLE ISSUE?

Asked whether Bitcoin owners should vote on crypto policy alone, Lynaugh argued the honest answer is that it does not need to be anyone's top priority to matter. A candidate who picks up votes from people who rank crypto fifth on their list, he said, is still picking up votes nobody else is reaching. "That tiny edge, whether it's in a trade or anything, is what makes the difference between winning and losing," he said, framing crypto voters as a swing bloc candidates from either party can court without political cost.

Lynaugh's closing pitch to the audience was about consistency, not any single bill on the floor. Crypto voters proved they were real in 2024, lost some momentum through a rough 2026, and now have to prove the first result was not a fluke. That consistency, not any one piece of legislation, is the bet Stand With Crypto is asking crypto voters to cash today.
