US Government Bitcoin Hits Coinbase Prime Hours Before $400 Million Liquidation Cascade

Bitcoin dropped from roughly $85,500 to below $84,000 in about twenty minutes on October 7, wiping out more than $400 million in leveraged long positions in under an hour. The move itself was not unusual for a market that has whipsawed for weeks. What made traders look twice was everything that lined up around it.

A $2,000 DROP IN TWENTY MINUTES

CoinGlass data put the hourly long liquidation figure at roughly $400 million, with longs making up the overwhelming majority of the damage. Over a full 24 hour window, total liquidations across crypto markets ran higher, but the headline number was the speed: a sharp, one sided flush that cleared out leveraged bulls in a single sitting rather than a slow bleed.

On the Simply Bitcoin show, host Opti framed it as a low volume Tuesday night flush rather than a trend change, pointing out that funding rates and open interest barely moved relative to the size of the drop. A Bitfinex research note referenced on the show made the same point: a real deleveraging event should drain open interest, and this one barely dented it, which suggests the dip was bought about as fast as it was sold.

THE GOVERNMENT BITCOIN THAT LANDED AT COINBASE PRIME

Hours before the liquidation cascade, wallets linked to the US government moved 833.6 BTC, worth about $71.56 million, to Coinbase Prime. On chain researchers traced the coins to two sources: funds forfeited in the Potapenko-Turogin fraud case and Bitcoin recovered from the 2016 Bitfinex hack. A day later, Galaxy Research flagged a far larger follow up transfer of roughly 8,428 BTC, pushing the two day total sent to Coinbase Prime to about 9,261 BTC, or $770 million.

Coinbase Prime handles custody, brokerage and OTC trading for institutional clients, including government agencies, so a transfer into it does not by itself confirm a sale. Officials have historically described these moves as custody steps. But the timing, directly ahead of a leverage flush, was enough to put the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve back in the conversation on the show, including the open question of whether any of the government's scattered agency holdings have actually been consolidated into the reserve at all.

FOUR WALLETS, ONE SUSPICIOUSLY TIMED SHORT

The detail that actually drove the insider trading chatter was separate from the government transfer. On chain analyst Lookonchain reported that four newly created wallets funded with a combined $1 million in USDC opened 40x leveraged short positions on Hyperliquid totaling 148.49 BTC, worth about $12.5 million in notional exposure, shortly before Bitcoin broke below $84,000.

Nothing in the on chain record proves the wallets caused the move or that whoever opened them had advance knowledge of anything. The timing alone does not establish insider trading. What it does establish is that a handful of accounts with no trading history picked the exact window to get aggressively short, and profited when the market obliged within the hour.

WHY $87,000 KEEPS REJECTING BITCOIN

Zooming out, Bitcoin has now tested the $87,000 level roughly three times in the past month without breaking through, each time turning back toward the low $80,000s. On the show, Opti read that as evidence of an active ceiling, whether from market makers clearing leverage in both directions or from genuine seller interest at that price, rather than confirmation that the broader uptrend is over.

The practical read for anyone holding spot Bitcoin: a $1,500 to $2,000 move on a low liquidity night is not the same signal as a break of the $83,000 floor. The first is leverage getting cleared. The second would be the level the show said actually changes the conversation.
