River's New Data Shows Owning One Whole Bitcoin Is Rarer Than Being A Millionaire

Owning one whole bitcoin does not sound like an exclusive club when the price is still five figures. New estimates from Bitcoin financial services firm River suggest otherwise.

THE NUMBERS BEHIND ONE WHOLE COIN

Roughly 825,000 people worldwide own at least one whole bitcoin, according to River's new estimates. That figure carries a stated plausible range of 600,000 to 1 million people.

RARER THAN A MILLIONAIRE

Framed as odds, owning a whole bitcoin today is roughly a 1-in-10,000 chance in the world's population, compared with roughly a 1-in-143 chance of becoming a millionaire. Dividing the world's roughly 57.5 million millionaires by the estimated number of whole-coin owners puts the gap at about 70 to 1.

WHY THE COUNT IS HARD TO PIN DOWN

Roughly 972,000 addresses hold at least one bitcoin, but that raw count includes corporate treasuries, governments, exchange-traded funds, and exchanges, all of which had to be stripped out first. To fill the gap left by exchange custody, where a single address can represent millions of retail clients, River applied the ownership pattern seen on the public blockchain to estimate how those custodial balances likely break down.

WHY THIS GETS HARDER FROM HERE

On the show, the hosts floated the idea that this might mark peak whole coiner, the point where acquiring a full bitcoin only gets harder from here as price climbs and supply keeps tightening. Millionaires get added by the millions each year as asset prices, real estate, and equity markets rise, but the number of people who can ever hold a full bitcoin is mechanically bounded. Bitcoin's supply cap sits at 21 million coins, and roughly 20.1 million have already been mined.

Anyone who already holds one whole coin, whether they bought it at $1,000 or at $70,000, is sitting in a smaller group than the millionaire down the street. That gap is not going to close. It only widens as the remaining coins get harder to find.
