Ray Dalio Still Holds Just 1 Percent Bitcoin, Says He Prefers Gold

Ray Dalio went on Diary of a CEO to talk about money, and once again the conversation turned to Bitcoin. The Bridgewater Associates founder's answer has not moved much in the past year: he owns it, he just does not own much of it.

WHAT DALIO SAID ON THE SHOW

Asked directly about his Bitcoin allocation, Dalio explained that while there are different kinds of money, gold was a better investment, adding that Bitcoin only makes up 1% of his portfolio and that he prefers gold, pointing to gold bars rather than the Bitcoin. On the hard money side of his portfolio more broadly, Dalio holds roughly 1% of his portfolio in bitcoin for diversification and has recommended a 15% allocation to bitcoin or gold, calling it the "best return-to-risk ratio" given America's debt trajectory.

His reasoning for favoring gold over Bitcoin centers on two things: privacy and durability against future technology. Bitcoin is a type of money that can't be printed, but there are technologies that can hurt it, in other words, if there's quantum computing, and it can be monitored by governments and so on, and it could be taxed. Gold, in his view, does not carry that same exposure.

THE SHOW'S TAKE

Reacting to the clip live, the host pushed back on two parts of Dalio's framing. On the idea that central banks will not touch Bitcoin because they want private, controllable transactions, the host pointed out that central banks are already holding Bitcoin in small amounts, calling the "government won't want it" argument backwards: in his read, government hostility toward Bitcoin has historically coincided with price strength, not weakness. On the quantum computing risk, guest George Bodin was blunt, saying he does not consider it a real concern right now and expects the community will be able to address quantum threats as they materialize.

WHERE GOLD ACTUALLY HAS THE WEAKER HAND

Bodin's sharpest disagreement with Dalio was not about Bitcoin at all, it was about gold's own vulnerabilities. He argued that gold's reputation for being unseizable does not hold up once it sits inside a custodian or a central bank vault, pointing to sanctioned Russian assets as an example of gold that was not actually beyond reach once it was held somewhere other than a country's own vaults. His larger point: gold's biggest weakness is that moving it, securing it, and truly self-custodying it is difficult in a way that Bitcoin, held correctly, is not.

THE TAKEAWAY

Dalio's position has not really shifted. He still treats Bitcoin as a small, diversifying position rather than a core holding, and he still ranks gold above it for the reasons he has given for over a year. What has shifted is the audience reaction: a legendary macro investor allocating any real money to Bitcoin, even 1%, no longer reads as news on this show. It reads as the floor.
