Coldcard Hack Turns Bitcoin's Self-Custody Debate Toward Multisig by Default

The Coldcard breach exposed a hard truth about how most Bitcoin holders actually protect their coins: a single device, generating a single seed phrase, standing between a life's savings and total loss. On the show, Kent Halliburton, CEO and co-founder of Sazmining, joined hosts Nico and Opti to argue that the era of single-signature wallets holding meaningful savings is ending, and that some form of multisig or collaborative custody has to become the default.

ONE KEY, ONE POINT OF FAILURE

Halliburton said a hardware wallet only has three jobs: generate a truly random seed, sign with it, and protect it from anyone else getting access. He argued that Coldcard failing at the first of those three, after years of being recommended across the community, including by Simply Bitcoin during a past sponsorship, is what makes the moment so damaging. The hosts said what caught them off guard was learning how many holders, even experienced ones, were using single-signature setups for their entire stack.

WHY MULTISIG CHANGES THE MATH

The pitch for multisig is straightforward: instead of one key controlling funds, a wallet requires multiple keys to move coins, so compromising one key alone isn't enough to drain it. Block's Bitkey device, which the hosts pointed to repeatedly as an example of multisig done simply, splits custody among three keys, one stored in the hardware wallet, one in the Bitkey mobile app, and one on Block's server, with recovery requiring only two of the three so users keep control even if Block were to disappear. There is no seed phrase to write down or lose.

COLLABORATIVE CUSTODY AS THE MIDDLE GROUND

Beyond device-level multisig, the hosts pointed to collaborative custody providers such as Unchained, Casa, and Nunchuk, where a company holds one key while the user holds the others. Halliburton said even if a Coldcard seed had been compromised, a holder using one of these setups would have lost nothing, since the attacker would only ever reach one of several required keys. He argued this middle ground, neither fully self-managed nor fully outsourced, is where most people who take Bitcoin seriously but aren't technical specialists will end up.

WHAT THE HOSTS SAID TO DO NOW

The advice from the show was direct: for holdings above a casual, spending-money amount, single-sig without a passphrase or dice-rolled entropy is no longer good enough. For most people, that means either a multisig device that removes the seed phrase entirely, or a collaborative custody arrangement with a reputable provider. A fully sovereign, self-managed multisig setup using tools like Sparrow remains an option, but the hosts warned it is unforgiving for anyone who isn't already comfortable with the technical details.

THE TAKEAWAY

The lesson the hosts drew from the week wasn't that self-custody failed. It was that single points of failure did. Halliburton said Bitcoin is forcing the community to learn, in real time, how to hold a form of property that has never existed before, and that the next chapter of self-custody will be built around collaboration rather than one person, one device, and one seed phrase.
