Bitcoin's 44% Q3 Is Its Best Since 2017. The Last Two Times, Q4 Exploded

Bitcoin is closing out the third quarter of 2026 up roughly 44 percent, its best Q3 performance since 2017 and only the second time the quarter has posted a gain this large. The price sits near 84,000 dollars, a 1.69 trillion dollar market cap, after briefly touching 85,000 dollars earlier in the week.
WHERE THIS Q3 RANKS
Bitcoin's third quarter gain this year trails only 2017, when the price surged roughly 78 percent over the same three months, and comes in ahead of 2013's Q3 gain of around 40 percent. Average Q3 returns for Bitcoin sit closer to single digits, which is what makes a 44 percent quarter stand out as a historical outlier rather than a typical summer.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE OTHER TWO BIG Q3S
History offers a specific comparison. After Bitcoin's 2017 Q3 rally, the fourth quarter delivered a roughly 215 percent gain that took the price from the low thousands toward 20,000 dollars. After 2013's smaller Q3 gain, Q4 that year returned closer to 480 percent as Bitcoin ran from under 150 dollars into the low thousands. Both of Bitcoin's strongest Q3s on record were followed by the two largest Q4 rallies in its history.
THE COUNTEREXAMPLE WORTH REMEMBERING
That pattern is not automatic. Bitcoin's most recent Q4, in 2025, broke a seven year streak of positive fourth quarters and closed down roughly 23 percent, the kind of result that would have seemed unthinkable given the asset's Q4 history. Average Q4 returns across Bitcoin's history run above 75 percent, but that average includes years that did not work out, and 2025 is the freshest reminder that the pattern can fail.
WHAT THE NEXT THREE MONTHS DECIDE
If Bitcoin's current rally tracks the 2013 and 2017 scripts, Q4 2026 would be one of the biggest quarters in the asset's history. If it tracks 2025 instead, the year ends on a much quieter note. The quarter closing tonight does not answer which path comes next. It just puts Bitcoin in rare company heading into the three months that have decided it before.
