AI Stock Rout Erases $2 Trillion and Drags Bitcoin Down With It

Wall Street's best post-midterm rally in decades lasted exactly one trading session. A day after Democrats swept both chambers of Congress and stocks celebrated, a sell-off tied to fears over AI regulation wiped out that entire gain and then some, and Bitcoin got pulled down with it.

A RALLY THAT DIDN'T SURVIVE THE NIGHT

On Wednesday, the Dow jumped 1,569 points and the Nasdaq rose 1.44% as investors cheered the Democratic sweep. By Thursday, all of it was gone. The S&P 500 fell 334.89 points, down 4.4%, its worst day since President Trump's April 2025 "Liberation Day" tariff shock. The Dow dropped 1,833 points, or 3.4%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 5.5%, closing in correction territory and landing 11.9% below the record high it set in October.

The damage was concentrated in chips and AI infrastructure. A closely watched semiconductor index fell roughly 12% in its worst day in more than six years. The sell-off had already torn through Asian markets overnight, with semiconductor and AI stocks across South Korea, Taiwan and Japan taking heavy losses hours before US markets even opened.

DEMOCRATS PUT A PRICE TAG ON THE AI BUILDOUT

The trigger wasn't an earnings miss. It was politics. Key to the selloff was Texas, where Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated Republican Governor Greg Abbott in part by campaigning on a moratorium on new data centers, a state that hosts a large share of the country's planned data center capacity. Investors read that result, and the broader midterm sweep, as a signal that the free ride AI infrastructure has gotten from Washington is ending.

Representative Ted Lieu, vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus, said as much at a post-election press conference.

"The Trump administration and House Republicans made a conscious decision to let the AI industry run wild. That was a bad decision politically and on policy. Next term, we will hold public hearings on AI and pass legislation with reasonable guardrails."

Arizona Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari went further, naming a specific target on day one of the new Congress.

"Top of the Democratic agenda on day 1 needs to be a pause on advanced AI development, regulation of this out of control industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence."

Ansari's push lines up with the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, legislation from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar that would halt advanced AI training until federal safety rules exist and permanently ban the development of systems that exceed human cognitive performance.

On the show, the hosts also pointed to a JPMorgan client note making the rounds, which argued that the current AI investment boom is concentrated in a handful of mega cap firms while broad productivity gains from AI deployment have yet to show up in the economic data, the same pattern that has historically preceded the end of technology-driven investment booms.

BITCOIN GETS CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE

Bitcoin had rallied above $80,000 a day earlier as shorts got squeezed following the midterm results. By Thursday, it had given almost all of that back, falling below $76,000 and dropping as much as 6% on the day. Total crypto liquidations across the market topped $1 billion over 24 hours, with more than 200,000 traders wiped out. Bitcoin alone accounted for more than $250 million of that total, with long positions making up the overwhelming majority of the damage.

The irony, as the hosts noted on the show, is that none of this has anything to do with Bitcoin's own fundamentals. It is a macro story about AI valuations and a new Congress, and Bitcoin is simply correlated enough to tech stocks right now to get dragged along for the ride. One early signal that the move may not be purely negative for Bitcoin long term: gold climbed on the same day stocks and Bitcoin fell, a sign that some capital already started rotating into assets that can't be debased.

Whether that capital eventually finds its way into Bitcoin instead of staying in gold is the open thread from here. For now, the AI trade that has carried the stock market most of this year is the one taking the hit, and Bitcoin is paying a toll it didn't choose to pay.
