A Gold Bug and a Bitcoiner Agree the System Is Breaking. They Disagree on What Replaces It.

Lynette Zang has spent more than six decades in markets, starting as a teenager in commercial banking and later working as a stockbroker studying currency cycles since 1987. She joined Simply Bitcoin Live as a guest, and for most of the conversation, she and the hosts agreed on almost everything except the one thing that matters most to a bitcoiner: whether bitcoin itself is the answer.

HER CASE: THE DOLLAR'S PURCHASING POWER IS NEARLY GONE

Zang's argument rests on a simple framework. Money's most important job, she said, is to store the value of a person's labor through time, something that can't be earned back once it's lost. By her account, tracking the Federal Reserve's own data on the purchasing power of the consumer dollar shows barely three cents left of the original dollar's value. She paired that with a reading on consumer sentiment that she said has broken below its lowest levels on record, and argued that once public confidence in the currency goes to zero, hyperinflation follows. She said she wouldn't be surprised to see a crisis hit before the end of this year, or even before the end of this month.

WHERE SHE AND THE HOSTS LINE UP

Zang walked through what she called her ship of Theseus thesis: that the monetary system is being replaced plank by plank, the same way the United States moved off a gold-backed dollar in stages last century, until one day the public wakes up holding something fundamentally different from what they started with. She pointed to Russia's digital ruble rollout as a live example of central banks laying new digital rails into the banking system well ahead of any public mandate to use them.

On the need for a hard asset outside the banking system, on the danger of counterparty risk, and on the idea that governments and corporations are quietly building the infrastructure for a new monetary system regardless of what the public wants, Zang and the hosts found almost total agreement. She described her own version of the bitcoiner mantra of beans, bullets, and bitcoin as food, water, energy security, barterability through silver, wealth preservation through gold, community, and shelter.

WHERE THEY SPLIT: HAS BITCOIN BEEN PROVEN YET

Zang's holdout is specific. Gold and silver, she argued, have preserved the value of labor across thousands of years and carry no counterparty risk, a track record bitcoin, in her view, has not yet matched over roughly seventeen years of existence. She also raised the string of recent hardware wallet exploits as evidence that self-custody has real, demonstrated failure points right now, not hypothetical ones.

The host pushed back that the exploits were hardware-specific and don't require giving up self-custody altogether, and that holding bitcoin never requires asking anyone's permission once the keys are secured. Zang's reply was that history shows more than 4,800 fiat currencies have failed and that each time, gold eventually gets pulled back into the system to restore confidence, with or without a 100% backing requirement.

THE MIDDLE GROUND THAT'S ALREADY FORMING

Both agreed on one empirical point: gold and bitcoin have shown a higher correlation in recent months than in prior cycles, which the host read as evidence that investors are increasingly choosing to hold both rather than picking one hard asset over the other. Zang said she doesn't view it as all-or-nothing either, noting she personally holds some physical gold while remaining unconvinced on bitcoin specifically because of her own public record as a gold advocate.

Zang closed by urging the audience toward diversification across both sound-money camps rather than loyalty to one, framing the disagreement over bitcoin as secondary to the shared fight to get sound money, in any form, back into a system dominated by debt-based currency.
